Leading Professional Learning Through Mentoring

Leading Professional Learning Through Mentoring is a flexible, interactive professional learning series aimed at supporting educators to design and lead a school based mentoring program for pre-service, beginning and experienced teachers.

The course is particularly useful for educators wishing to apply or maintain their Lead Teacher accreditation and for those wanting to design and implement a school based mentoring program in their schools.

Note: This course is currently being re-developed.

Course snapshot

  • Flexible online learning
  • 2 face-to-face workshops (after-hours) at Wollongong, Shoalhaven, Bega Valley and/or Eurobodalla campus
  • 6 Credit points towards a Master of Education (Educational Leadership) (to be approved)

Delivery format

The course employs a flexible learning methodology based on expert advice, peer collaboration and practical application. Interactive online activities, face-to-face workshops and online academic mentoring are designed to relate back to workplace design and implementation ensuring learning is contextualised and relevant to the specific needs of participants. Participants in the course will have the opportunity to form a Professional Network Team (PNT) with 4-6 co-learners from the course with support from an online academic mentor and to collect a portfolio of evidence in leadership skill in mentoring that can be used to support Lead accreditation requirements.

Phase 1: Reflect

Reflection on past experiences, research-based mentoring approaches and the strengths and challenges of the school context for mentoring.

Phase 2: Explore

Activities designed to explore the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST), mentoring skills and adult learning principles associated with professional learning.

Phase 3: Innovate

Synthesising the earlier phases and designing a school-based action plan for mentoring.
